Paul Celan: Death Fugue (the George Miller translation 2004)

we drink dawn's black milk at dusk

at noon and midnight we drink during the night we drink

we drink and drink

we dig a grave in the heavens there unconfined we can rest

a man lives in the house he plays with the snakes he writes

he writes as dusk falls over the Fatherland my golden haired Margarete

he writes it he walks from the house the stars flash above him he summons his dogs

he summons his Jews let them dig their ditch in the ground

now play we shall dance

dawn's black milk we drink you at dusk

morning and noon we drink you evenings we drink you

we drink and drink

a man lives in the house he plays with the snakes he writes

he writes as dusk falls over the Fatherland my golden haired Margarete

my ashen haired Shulamith we dig a grave in the heavens there unconfined we can rest

you there he orders dig deep in the earth you others sing and play

he draws the iron from his belt he swaggers blue are his eyes

you there dig deeper you others sound off for the dance

dawn's black milk we drink you at dusk

morning and noon we drink you evenings we drink you

we drink and drink

a man lives in the house my golden haired Margarete

my ashen haired Sulamith he plays with the snakes

he bids play more sweetly for death death is a master from the Fatherland

he bids play more darkly the cello then rise as smoke into the heavens

then you shall have a grave in the clouds there unconfined you can rest

dawn's black milk we drink you at night

we drink you at noon death is a master from the Fatherland

evenings and mornings we drink you we drink and drink

death is a master from the Fatherland blue are his eyes

he fires a lead bullet at you he does not miss

a man lives in the house my golden haired Margarete

he sics his dogs on us he dispatches us to a grave in the heavens

my golden haired Margarete

my ashen haired Sulamith.
